Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have been extremely poor in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. Their bowling hasn’t been great, but it’s the batters who have struggled the most. Neither the top order nor the middle to lower middle are firing. They are bereft of any plan, it seems.

CSK are rattled, says ex-PBKS coach
Former Royal Challengers Bengaluru batter and Punjab Kings head coach Wasim Jaffer has been shocked by their approach. CSK are known to plan well. They stick to these plans even when things aren’t going that well. Not this time around. Rahul Tripathi was dropped after a couple of bad games. The same goes for Sam Curran. Jamie Overton was chucked away after just one match.
“They’re losing too many wickets upfront. Whether it would be form or poor shot selection, whether it would be selection alone, and maybe throwing around too many players, those players might be feeling like, ‘I don’t know if I’m in or out,’ and that could be something we’re not used to when looking at a Chennai team. Usually, they’re stable, a good decision-making team and franchise. The team is like they’re a bit rattled at the moment,” Jaffer said on ESPNcricinfo TimeOut.

Is CSK’s approach outdated?
Their openers aren’t making runs. And if in case they do, the paper-thin middle order can’t back things up. It’s Shivam Dube or nothing from numbers 4 to 7, it seems. Jaffer gets the feeling that players aren’t certain about their selection, and CSK look a little bit rattled.
The way MS Dhoni and Vijay Shankar batted against the Delhi Capitals was a massive concern. They didn’t seem to be going for the hits. Both played for 56 balls and scored 84 runs. CSK lost by 25 runs. It was woeful to watch. As Jaffer says, they don’t seem to be trying. The approach doesn’t seem like a 2025 one but maybe of 2018.
“If their top order doesn’t fire and Dube gets out, it looks like they shut shop very quickly. They feel really, really behind the game, and it doesn’t even look like they’re trying. That approach has been the most surprising to me; it’s happened twice in two games, where they shut shop too early. That’s a major concern for CSK,” he added.
