England cricketer Jofra Archer faced criticism after his initial performances in IPL 2025, where he conceded 109 runs without taking a wicket in Rajasthan Royals’ first two matches. However, he made an impressive comeback against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Chandigarh, securing three wickets and earning the Player of the Match award.
Archer’s mid-match rest and strong performance
During Rajasthan Royals’ innings, Archer was spotted taking a nap under a blanket in the dressing room. This rest seemed to reenergize him, as he delivered a remarkable bowling performance in the second innings. Although not required with the bat, Archer struck powerfully with the ball, taking two wickets in his first over against PBKS.
Exceptional bowling in the first over
Archer began by dismissing Punjab opener Priyansh Arya for a golden duck on the first ball of the innings. Despite being hit for two boundaries by Shreyas Iyer, he managed to dismiss the PBKS captain by the end of the same over. Archer’s record in the first over of IPL innings is impressive, with 13 overs bowled, yielding eight wickets at an average of 5.75 and an economy rate of 3.53. His bowling impact in these opening overs is the best in IPL history.
Sealing the victory
Archer claimed a third wicket by dismissing Arshdeep Singh, ending with figures of 3 for 25 in Rajasthan Royals’ 50-run win. Reflecting on his performance, Archer shared, “Beginning of the tournament that happened but happy to contribute to the win. When there are days like this, you make sure you have to cash in, enjoy the good ones, and take the bad ones in your stride. You will be lucky in some circumstances, everyone is training just as hard as you, every day is not going to be a great day,” he said at the post-match presentation.
With this victory, PBKS faced their first defeat of IPL 2025, placing them fourth on the points table with two wins and a loss. Meanwhile, Rajasthan Royals are in seventh place with two wins from their two matches.
