According to South African legendary batter and former Karachi Kings coach Herschelle Gibbs, who has closely worked with Babar Azam during the PSL, admitted to a language barrier with Babar Azam. To put it in exact words, the Pakistan star batter’s English hinders clear communication. Azam, who is clearly not in form in the recently held ODIs—first against New Zealand and then South Africa, scored 10 (23) and 23 (19), respectively, showcasing his struggle.
After watching the Pakistan batter’s struggle, a user wrote on X, “Hey Gibbs, how about giving some suggestions to Babar Azam like you did back in 2021/2022 during PSL with Karachi Kings? I guess he won’t deny your interference this time.” In response, Herschelle Gibbs said, “Language is an issue with Babar… as you know his English isn’t great, so it’s difficult to get points across to him.”
Following this comment, there have been mixed reactions. Some feel the statement is more of an excuse, as several translation tools are available today that make communication easier, while others agree with what Gibbs said.
Currently, it is ODI fever, and Babar Azam has suffered a decline in this format as well. It all started in the 2023 Asia Cup, where he performed decently but not up to his usual standards. His average saw a significant dip, and his run-making ability, for which Babar is known, faltered as he struggled to convert good starts into big scores. But all eyes are now on the upcoming Champions Trophy. The good news is that Pakistan will play on home soil, except for the match against India, which is set to take place in Dubai. Playing on familiar surfaces could work to his advantage, and fans can expect Azam to take charge and perform well.
