Now we have entered the business end of the Ranji Trophy 2024-2025, and eight best teams in the competition have started their respective battles, to move a step closer to the coveted trophy. As usual, all eyes were on the 42-time winners, who took on Haryana in Kolkata, while Gujarat took on Saurashtra in Rajkot, J&K took on Kerala in Pune, while Vidarbha face Tamil Nadu in Nagpur.
In what turned out to be a low-scoring affair from all the teams batting first, across matches, there came a few performances that hogged the limelight. InsideSport discusses all of them in detail.
Mumbai vs Haryana, Tanush Kotian & Shams Mulani Shine
There is a reason why Mumbai is the best domestic side in India. They are just never out of the game. After starting poorly — and being reduced to 113/7, Tanush Kotian and Shams Mulani strung a massive partnership of 165 for the 9th wicket. The new India recruit remained unbeaten on 85, while Mulani got out for 91. Anshul Kamboj picked up three wickets for Haryana, but then couldn’t close the Mumbai innings when needed.
Skipper Ajinkya Rahane flopped with 31, Suryakumar Yadav was poor with 9, while Shivam Dube could only score 28. Mumbai ended the day with 278/8.
What More Should Karun Nair Do?
Once again, as is the case most often, Karun Nair stepped up for Vidarbha again. He slammed an unbeaten 100 from 180 as his team ended the day on 264/6. Danish Malewar chipped in with a valuable 75, while all-rounder Vijay Shankar took 2 wickets for TN. Coming back to Karun, he now has 540 runs in this Ranji Trophy, at an average of 54.
J&K Batters Flop, All Eyes on Bowlers
On a track that is usually good for batting, J&K could only manage 228/8 on the opening day vs Kerala. Only batters Kanahiya Wadhwan (48) and Lone Nasir (44) could score some runs for the team. On the other hand, MD Nidheesh mounted the pressure with him fifer. Now, it is up to the bowling attack of J&K to bring them in the match, which has been one of the best in the Ranji Trophy this year.
Cheteshwar Pujara Fails, SAU in Trouble
IN a battle of equals, Team Saurashtra seemed to lag behind, when they were bundled out for a mere 216 in the first innings. Gujarat skipper Chintan Gaja was excellent as he bagged four wickets. Only Chirag Jani (69) could manage a fifty plus score for the team, while Cheteshwar Pujara was dismissed at only 26. At the end of the day, Gujarat were placed at 21/0, trailing by 195 runs.
