Spotting talent and then making them perform on the big stage, MI knows a thing or two about this. First they introduced chinaman Vignesh Puthur, who bagged 3/32 on his IPL debut, and then on Monday it was the turn of Left-arm pacer Ashwani Kumar, who returned with figures of 4/24 in his maiden match vs KKR, at the Wankhede Stadium.
These happen to be the joint-best figures by an Indian bowler along with ex-spinner Shadab Jakati, who also bagged 4/24 for CSK vs DD in 2009. And after his effort, the 23-year-old revealed his secret diet, that contributed to his performance. Ashwani said, that he did not have lunch in the afternoon, and just had a banana, as he did not feel hungry before the match. And of course, that worked wonders for him.
“I felt very good, there was pressure but the team environment helped me to settle down. I didn’t have lunch today, I only ate a banana, there was some pressure so I didn’t feel hungry,” Ashwani Kumar said. He planned his bowling well, and seemed to have done his home work for KKR batters.
He peppered Andre Russell with a couple of bouncers, and then castled him with a straighter one bowled at 140 kmph. “I made a bit of plan, they (team management) told me that it’s my debut match so enjoy yourself and back your skills. The captain also played his role, Hardik bhai told me to bowl it into the wicket,” he added.
